Where data centre data comes from
94 places that hold facts about individual data centres, what each gives, how to reach it, and whether we are allowed to reuse it.
The honest picture is that open per-site data is thin. Capacity, power and efficiency are rarely published for named sites, and the widest directories forbid copying. The most reliable facts come from planning documents, regulator filings and the operators themselves, so we link to those and record what we read. Of these sources, 22 are open or open with credit, 2 are share-alike, 13 restrict reuse, and 57 have terms we could not read or that do not say.
Reuse status is what the source's own page states. Where we could not read the terms, we say so and do not copy. This page is not legal advice.

| Source | What it gives | Access | Reuse | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Planning Data: planning application dataset Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government | Per site location, planning reference | Bulk download | Open with credit Licensed under the Open Government Licence v.3.0, © Crown copyright and database right 2026 | National platform for England only, with CSV, JSON, GeoJSON and Parquet downloads plus a REST API. The page shows about 100,000 applications and warns the dataset is incomplete and not ready for use, so it cannot yet be treated as a full register of data centre applications. I did not read the field specification, so status and proposal text are unconfirmed. |
| Find a National Infrastructure Project (Planning Inspectorate) Planning Inspectorate | Per site location, operator | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Beta service for England and Wales that lets users search by project name or applicant, with a list and map. Data centres only entered the NSIP regime on 8 January 2026 and there is no automatic size threshold, so only projects that elect or are directed into the regime will appear. I found no download, API or licence statement on the page. |
| Section 35 directions for data centres (Planning Casework Unit) Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (Planning Casework Unit) | Per site location, operator, IT MW, planning reference, status | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | Each direction and decision letter is a separate PDF on GOV.UK with the applicant, site, stated IT load and case reference, so it is rich per project but has to be collected one document at a time. The PDF itself carries no licence statement that I could read. |
| Slough Borough Council planning applications Slough Borough Council | Per site location, operator, planning reference, status | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Search is through the Agile Applications citizen portal, with a separate document archive reaching back to 1980. Slough is the densest data centre cluster in the UK, so it is a high value place to look, but there is no download or reuse statement on the page and each record has to be read by hand. |
| Thurrock Council public planning notices Thurrock Council | Per site location, planning reference, floor area | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Statutory press notices published as web pages and PDFs give the reference, site, proposal and floor area but usually not the applicant, power or operator. No reuse terms were stated. |
| Northumberland County Council planning search Northumberland County Council | Per site location, planning reference, status, operator | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The council offers application search, plans and decisions but the page states no data terms and I did not reach the search system itself. The large Cambois campus on the former Blyth Power Station site (QTS with Renaissance Land, outline consent for up to ten buildings) is the type of record held here, but I only confirmed it through trade press. |
| NESO Transmission Entry Capacity (TEC) register National Energy System Operator | Per site operator, grid MW, status, grid connection | API | Open with credit NESO Open Data Licence | Twice weekly CSV and API list of projects holding transmission entry contracts, with connection site, MW connected, contracted MW, effective date, status, plant type and a Gate column. It is generation and storage, not demand: a search of the live register (about 2,200 rows) for data centre returned nothing, so it will not list data centre loads. The licence requires the statement 'Supported by National Energy SO Open Data'. |
| NESO Demand Call for Input summary (March 2026) National Energy System Operator | Aggregate grid MW, status | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | Aggregate view of demand developers' intentions: about 152 data centre project phases and roughly 50.8 GW of requested demand, with connection dates from 2027 to 2035, labelled indicative only. No individual sites are named. A separate NESO freedom of information response from September 2026 declined project level data as commercially confidential, so named demand queue entries are not public from NESO. |
| UK Power Networks Open Data Portal: Large Demand Dashboard UK Power Networks | Per site status | API | Reuse unclear | The portal has an API and a dashboard described as listing live, accepted large demand projects in the London, East and South East licence areas. I could not confirm which columns that list shows or whether it names data centres, and I could not read a portal licence page (the one I tried returned not found). A related anonymised half hourly load dataset for about 100 operating data centres exists but removes site identity. |
| NGED Connections Reform Register National Grid Electricity Distribution | Per site | API | Reuse unclear NGED Open Data Licence | CKAN dataset of projects NGED submitted under the CMP435 reform, in CSV and PDF, for the Midlands, South West and Wales. It carries no outcomes or queue positions and the connection reform material is about generation and storage, so it is unlikely to identify data centres. The licence page was blocked to me, so I could not read the terms. |
| Ofgem consultation on transforming connections data Ofgem | Aggregate | PDF reports | Open with credit Crown copyright; material may be reused under the Open Government Licence, excluding logos and third party content | September 2026 consultation proposing a Demand Capacity Register covering high and extra high voltage demand above 1 MVA across transmission and distribution, plus a distribution works report. It is a proposal, not a dataset, and the licence versus code route for requiring publication is undecided. If adopted it would be the first public site level view of large demand connections. |
| AI Growth Zones collection Department for Science, Innovation and Technology | Aggregate location, status | Web search only | Open with credit GOV.UK states most content is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0 except where otherwise stated (site wide terms, not the collection page itself) | Announcement level list of zones: Oxfordshire (Culham), North East, North Wales, South Wales and Lanarkshire, with dates and some investment and job claims. It gives no operators or MW per zone on the page and the zones are regions, not individual facilities. |
| UK Compute Roadmap Department for Science, Innovation and Technology | Aggregate | PDF reports | Open with credit GOV.UK states most content is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0 except where otherwise stated (site wide terms, not the roadmap page itself) | Landing page for a 10 point plan with a 32 page PDF and an evidence annex corrected on 23 April 2026. The page lists no sites or capacities, and I did not read the PDFs, so any named public compute systems in them are unchecked. |
| Estimate of Data Centre Capacity: Great Britain 2024 Department for Science, Innovation and Technology | Aggregate IT MW | PDF reports | Open with credit Licensed under the terms of the Open Government Licence v3.0 except where otherwise stated | One off May 2025 regional total of IT capacity as at autumn 2024, about 1.6 GW for Great Britain with London around 1,048 MW. It was built from a commercial database, press releases and operator input, and the site level data underneath is not published, so it is a sanity check for our totals, not a source of site records. |
| Environment Agency public registers Environment Agency | Per site operator, location | API | Open with credit Environment Agency Conditional Licence | Searchable by business name, permit number, local authority or address, with an API reference page, covering industrial installation and other permits. England only, and there is no data centre category, so sites must be found by operator or address. Under the combustion plant rules summarised by techUK, standby generators need permits phased in by capacity, which is why generator data exists but is held in permit documents. The licence needs the Environment Agency attribution statement and excludes logos. |
| Environment Agency permit application notices on GOV.UK Environment Agency | Per site operator, location | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Each application is advertised as a short GOV.UK notice naming the operator, postcode and permit reference, with the detailed generator and thermal input figures sitting in a linked application document. The notice I read gave no generator detail and no licence statement. |
| Companies House API and free company data snapshot Companies House | Aggregate operator, owner | API | Reuse unclear | Company level records (names, status, officers, registered office) that identify the legal entity behind a site, not the site. A free monthly bulk snapshot, unsupported, is also offered. The developer site only says Crown copyright, and the GOV.UK register guidance carries an Open Government Licence footer but also says the search service is not meant for bulk downloads, so reuse of register data is unclear. |
| OpenStreetMap data centre features OpenStreetMap contributors | Per site location, operator, owner | API | Share-alike Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL) | Community mapped buildings tagged telecom=data_center, with optional name, operator, owner, reference and address tags, queryable through the Overpass API. Footprints are useful for locating sites but capacity and status are not part of the tag scheme. I could not run a UK query (Overpass connections failed), so UK completeness is untested. ODbL needs credit to OpenStreetMap and share alike on derived databases. |
| Baxtel United Kingdom data centre listings Baxtel | Per site location, operator, floor area, facility MW, status, PUE, opened | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Footer states all rights reserved; terms forbid scraping, data mining and copying content without authorisation | Commercial directory claiming about 600 UK facilities from 220 providers, with floor area, power, status and sometimes PUE and a planned year. Wide but unaudited, and the terms bar scraping, with a dataset sold on request. Use it only to find leads and confirm them elsewhere. |
| Equinix UK data centre pages Equinix | Per site location, floor area, cooling, certifications, connectivity, power source | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The country page gives only totals (14 facilities, 10 in London and 4 in Manchester, UK wide certifications and renewable energy claims), while each site page adds address, floor area, redundancy, cooling and certifications. No MW figure was shown on the pages I read, and I did not read the site terms. Other operators publish in the same marketing style, so this is typical of the operator route. |
Ireland, Netherlands, Germany and the Nordics
| Source | What it gives | Access | Reuse | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSO Data Centres Metered Electricity Consumption Central Statistics Office (Ireland) | Aggregate | API | Open with credit Statistical information on the CSO website is accessible free of charge and licensed under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0). | Quarterly national totals of metered data centre electricity from 2015 to 2024, available through the PxStat database and Excel tables. The CSO says data centres are not separately classified in the source data, so there is no site level or regional split. |
| National Planning Applications (points and polygons) Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (via data.gov.ie) | Per site location, planning reference | API | Open with credit Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 | A national map layer of planning application sites with GeoJSON downloads and a REST service, so data centre applications can be found by filtering on the description. We did not inspect the attribute table, and the polygon resource shows a 2017 data date against a 2026 metadata date, so freshness needs checking before use. |
| An Coimisiun Pleanala case pages An Coimisiun Pleanala | Per site location, owner, planning reference, status | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse All rights to design, text, graphics and other material on the website are the copyright of An Coimisiun Pleanala or other third parties; permission is needed to copy third party material. | Each case page gives the site address, applicant, a description of the development, the council reference and the decision, with inspector reports attached. Only appealed or directly submitted cases appear, so data centres that cleared the local council without appeal are missing. |
| EPA Licence and Enforcement Access Portal open data APIs Environmental Protection Agency (Ireland) | Per site location, operator, status | API | Open with credit The data provided in the API is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. | REST APIs over licence applications, compliance correspondence and returns for EPA authorised sites. Only data centres that hold or seek an EPA authorisation appear, and we did not test which of them do, so treat it as a partial cross check rather than a register. |
| EirGrid Data Centre Constrained Area Overview EirGrid | Aggregate grid connection | PDF reports | Terms restrict reuse Copyright EirGrid. All rights reserved; no part may be modified, reproduced or copied without written permission. | A May 2026 overview that treats greater Dublin as fully constrained and gives rough capacity ranges for the Galway, Limerick and Cork areas. It names no sites or stations, so it explains where connections are hard but not who holds them. |
| CRU Large Energy Users connection policy (proposed decision CRU/202504) Commission for Regulation of Utilities | Aggregate grid connection, power source | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | The proposed policy requires new data centres to bring dispatchable on site or nearby generation or storage matched to their import capacity, and to self report renewable use and emissions. It holds no site list, and we read the proposed paper rather than the final decision. |
| RVO energy efficiency reports for data centres (Excel) Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Per site location, operator, IT MW, floor area, water, cooling, power source, connectivity, opened | Bulk download | Reuse unclear No named licence. RVO's open data page says its information is public and may be reused, with no duty to credit RVO unless a dataset says otherwise; its images are excluded. | An Excel sheet dated 14 August 2026 holds 104 sites reporting on 2025, with one row per site and columns for installed IT power, energy, water, waste heat, refrigerants and traffic. Operators may mark answers confidential, fewer than half of the rows give IT power or total energy, and location is only a municipality code. |
| Netbeheer Nederland national capacity map for the electricity grid Netbeheer Nederland (with TenneT and the regional grid operators) | Aggregate grid connection | Web search only | Reuse unclear | An interactive map that colours areas by whether transmission capacity for new demand or feed in is free, limited, under study with a queue, or short. It shows area level headroom only, with no named customers or queued projects. |
| CBS electricity delivered to data centres, 2017 to 2024 Statistics Netherlands (CBS) | Aggregate | Bulk download | Open with credit CBS says reuse of the site content is permitted provided CBS is named as the source (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0). | A custom Excel table of national electricity deliveries to data centres by size class, built from grid operator data. The page does not say how data centres were identified and gives no regional or site split. |
| Overheid.nl Berichten over uw Buurt (permit notices API) Overheid.nl (Dutch central government) | Per site location, planning reference, status | API | Reuse unclear | A search web service (SRU) over municipal notices such as permits and building plans, which is the practical route to Dutch data centre permit applications. The page names no licence, and the notices are free text, so each data centre must be picked out by keyword and then matched by hand. |
| Energy efficiency register for data centres (RZReg, EnEfG) Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) | Per site location, operator, owner, IT MW, facility MW, floor area, power source, PUE, water, cooling, certifications, opened, connectivity | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Operators of sites with at least 300 kW non redundant connection must report yearly, and the ministry's data point guide lists name, owner, operator, postcode, IT and electrical load, energy, renewables, waste heat, water, PUE and traffic. The public viewer sits at rechenzentrumsregister.bund.de, which we could not open, so the published subset, any export route and the terms are unconfirmed. |
| Federal Environment Agency analysis of the data centre register Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) | Aggregate | Web search only | Reuse unclear | An agency review of the published register data, which counted 319 entries, found many large international operators missing and flagged inconsistent IT versus total power in about one in eight records. Useful for judging how far to trust register rows, though the snapshot is older than later press counts. |
| Bitkom study Rechenzentren in Deutschland (Borderstep) Bitkom e. V. | Aggregate | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | Industry estimates of German IT capacity and electricity use, with Frankfurt and Berlin called out as hubs. The press release we read is from February 2022 and the figures are national or city level, so it is context rather than a source of site records. |
| Nkom register of data centre operators Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) | Aggregate operator | Bulk download | Reuse unclear | A daily updated table of 60 commercial operators with organisation numbers and a crypto mining share, plus a headline count of 113 registered sites, with a CSV download. Individual sites and in house corporate data centres are not named, which Nkom puts down to security. |
| Statnett statistics on connection cases Statnett | Per site operator, location, grid MW, status | Web search only | Reuse unclear | A dashboard of cases in queue, reserved or connected, which Statnett says shows reserving organisations, megawatts, place and industry category, filterable by price area and industry. It shows no exact queue position, covers only the transmission operator's cases, and the page offers copy to Excel rather than a stated bulk download. |
| Statistics Norway article on data centres in Norway Statistics Norway (SSB) | Aggregate | Web search only | Reuse unclear | SSB matched the Nkom register and the business register against facility electricity use for 2020 to 2023, covering 26 traditional commercial sites run by 15 providers. It leaves out crypto mining, in house sites and newer AI sites, and publishes grouped analysis rather than site rows. |
| Svenska kraftnat statistics on ongoing connection cases Svenska kraftnat | Aggregate grid MW | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | Applied, reserved and assigned capacity for demand and generation, split by electricity area and county, with a table of reservations by year since 2020. It does not name customers or separate data centres from other demand, and most connections happen on regional networks outside its scope. |
| Svenska kraftnat transmission grid capacity map Svenska kraftnat | Aggregate grid connection | Web search only | Reuse unclear | A first version map giving an indicative county by county view of withdrawal and injection capacity for 2026. The agency itself calls it indicative and says it excludes the regional and local networks. |
| Swedish Energy Agency data centre energy performance reporting Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) | Aggregate | On request | Reuse unclear | Under Act 2025:570 owners of sites with 500 kW or more installed IT load report to the EU database by 15 May each year, and security sensitive sites are exempt. The agency only registers the company and contact, so there is no Swedish list of sites on this page. |
| Finnish government consultation on data centre energy disclosure Finnish Government (Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment) | Aggregate | On request | Reuse unclear | Describes the duty for sites with at least 500 kW IT load, about 50 in Finland, to report to the EU database each year. It is a consultation notice, so it tells us who must report but gives no site data, and we found no Finnish national list. |
| Fingrid study on locating industrial facilities near generation Fingrid | Aggregate grid connection | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | A press release saying signed connection agreements would raise Finnish consumption by nearly 40 per cent if all were built. We found no public project list or queue on Fingrid's pages, so for Finnish sites grid data is aggregate only. |
| Energinet pause on new grid connection agreements Energinet | Aggregate grid connection | Web search only | Reuse unclear | A May 2026 news item on the pause that began on 2 March 2026 and a new model for large connections, with new agreements not due until autumn. The page text we could read has no project list or queue figures. |
| Plandata.dk municipal and local plans Plandata.dk (Danish national planning register) | Aggregate location, planning reference, status | API | Reuse unclear | The national register of kommuneplaner and lokalplaner, with WFS, WMS and REST access and a public hearing list. Plans cover areas rather than named buildings, so a data centre only shows up where a plan text mentions one, and we found no licence statement on the pages we read. |
| Data Centers in Milan metropolitan City (Zenodo) Politecnico di Milano (ProdAction project) | Per site location, operator, status | Bulk download | Open with credit Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0) | A 20 kB spreadsheet published in May 2026 giving municipality, operator, site name, address, a nominal power range and operational status for sites in the Milan metropolitan area. Single city only, with no stated count or source list on the record, so check each row before relying on it. |
European Union and global
| Source | What it gives | Access | Reuse | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| European database on data centres and public dashboard (EED Article 12) European Commission, Directorate-General for Energy | Aggregate IT MW, PUE, water, power source | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The central database receives every member state's site reports for sites of 500 kW IT load and above, but the public face we saw is an aggregated dashboard with country comparisons. The Commission legal notice licenses its own web content under CC BY 4.0, but we did not confirm that this extends to the dashboard data. |
| European database on data centres (Energy Efficiency Directive reporting) European Commission, DG Energy | Aggregate IT MW, PUE, water | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Operators of sites with at least 500 kW of IT power report annually through an EU Login platform, but the Commission page says it publishes only an online dashboard of aggregated figures. Trade press reported 776 sites in 18 member states in the first release, with gaps in country participation, so it cannot yet name or describe individual sites. |
| EU data centre sustainability rating scheme (proposed labels) European Commission (proposal, as summarised by Latham and Watkins) | Per site PUE, water, power source | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The proposal of 21 September 2026 would give each data centre of 500 kW or more an A to G label for PUE and WUE plus an energy source breakdown, published per site in the European database. First labels are not due until 15 August 2027 and I could only read a law firm summary, not the Commission text, so nothing is available yet and public fields may be narrowed for trade secrets. |
| EU Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres European Commission Joint Research Centre | Aggregate operator, location | Web search only | Reuse unclear | A voluntary scheme whose programme page says more than 500 data centres have joined, with separate participant and endorser lists linked from it. The linked list pages rejected automated requests, so I could not confirm the fields per entry and it is a participation signal rather than measured performance. |
| OpenStreetMap telecom=data_center features OpenStreetMap contributors | Per site location, operator, owner | Bulk download | Share-alike Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL) | Taginfo counted 4,694 features tagged telecom=data_center on 2 October 2026, mostly mapped as building outlines, with name, operator, ref and address tags recommended. There is no standard tag for power, floor area or racks, so it gives a reliable anchor for position and operator but nothing on capacity, and derived databases must stay under ODbL. |
| Wikidata data centre items Wikimedia Foundation (Wikidata community) | Per site location, operator | API | Open licence All structured data in the main, property and lexeme namespaces is made available under the Creative Commons CC0 License | A SPARQL query on 2 October 2026 found 197 items that are data centres or a subclass of one, so coverage is thin worldwide, and the sample I pulled leaned towards London sites. Items carry operator and coordinates where editors have added them, which makes it a good place to link identifiers rather than a source of capacity data. |
| Overture Maps places and buildings Overture Maps Foundation | Per site location | Bulk download | Open with credit Places: CDLA Permissive 2.0 for most sources, Apache 2.0 for Foursquare, CC0 for AllThePlaces. Buildings and base: ODbL | Releases are open parquet files on S3 and Azure (release 2026-09-23.1 at the time of checking), with names, addresses, websites and a confidence score. The places taxonomy has no data centre category, so sites must be found by name matching, and the buildings theme brings ODbL share-alike terms. |
| PeeringDB facility records PeeringDB | Per site location, operator, connectivity, grid connection | API | Terms restrict reuse PeeringDB Acceptable Use Policy: data may not be passed on in bulk to any other person or organisation unless approved by PeeringDB | The public API returns a record per colocation facility with address, coordinates, owning organisation, counts of networks, exchanges and carriers, and free text fields on voltage and diverse substations. The acceptable use policy forbids reproducing, storing or passing on the data in bulk without approval, and limits full downloads to Internet operational purposes, so use it as a lookup and ask for written permission before keeping any of it. |
| Equinix data centre locations Equinix | Per site location, operator, connectivity | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Website terms: none of the material may be copied, reproduced, distributed, republished or downloaded | The page claims 282 data centres in more than 70 metros, grouped by country and metro with ecosystem blurbs rather than technical specifications. Link only: the website terms bar copying of the material, and it covers one operator's own estate. |
| Digital Realty data centre locations Digital Realty | Per site location, operator, connectivity | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The page claims more than 300 data centres in over 55 metros across Americas, EMEA and Asia Pacific, with cloud on-ramp filters but no power or size figures at this level. I could not find its terms page (the likely addresses returned errors), so treat reuse as unclear and link only. |
| Iron Mountain data centre locations Iron Mountain | Per site location, operator | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The page lists 30 or more locations across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific and cites a 1.4 GW portfolio, with detail on separate facility pages. Its terms page rate limited me, so reuse is unclear and this is link only. |
| NTT Global Data Centers locations NTT Global Data Centers | Per site location, operator | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The page claims over 160 data centres in more than 20 countries and regions with 2,000 MW or more of critical IT load, and names sites by city such as Frankfurt, Berlin and London without per-site megawatts. I did not locate its terms, so reuse is unclear and this is link only. |
| Vantage Data Centers campus list Vantage Data Centers | Per site location, operator | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Website terms: materials may not be reproduced, publicly displayed or otherwise used without the prior consent of Vantage | Lists 40 campuses across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific by name, without capacity on the overview page. The terms require consent before reuse, so link only. |
| STACK Infrastructure markets and campuses STACK Infrastructure | Per site location, operator | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Website terms: a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence for personal and non-commercial use | Shows 24 markets with individual location pages and portfolio totals of 8.5 GW or more built and in development. The terms give only personal, non-commercial use and claim the content as proprietary, so link only. |
| Uptime Institute Tier Certification list Uptime Institute | Per site operator, location, certifications | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Website terms of use: user does not alter, copy, disseminate, redistribute or republish any content or feature of the website | The site says over 4,300 awards have been issued in more than 120 countries, filterable by country or company, with design, constructed facility and operational sustainability types. The list is a script driven page that did not render in my fetch, so I could not confirm per-entry columns, and the terms ask for written approval before reuse. |
| IAF CertSearch (accredited management system certificates) International Accreditation Forum | Per site operator, location, certifications | API | Reuse unclear | Collects certificate records from more than 2,500 certification bodies, with organisation, standard, scope, validity and site or location data, and offers manual search, bulk checks and an API. It covers ISO 27001 and similar standards for any organisation, so data centre sites must be picked out by scope text. Its terms page was blocked to automated reading, so reuse is unclear. |
| OCP Ready data centre recognition and facilities listing Open Compute Project Foundation | Per site location, operator, certifications | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Colocation sites that pass an OCP Ready self assessment are listed on the OCP Marketplace, which shows them on a map. The programme page names no sites, the listing did not render its entries for me, and I did not read the OCP policies, so reuse is unclear. |
| Epoch AI Frontier Data Centers hub Epoch AI | Per site location, operator, owner, tenants, status, IT MW, chips, cooling, opened | Bulk download | Open with credit Creative Commons Attribution license | A directory of 93 large AI campuses (updated 2 October 2026), mainly in North America with some in Europe and Asia, with IT power, H100 equivalent compute, hardware, cooling and construction timeline from satellite imagery and permits. Downloadable as CSV or a ZIP; the pages do not name the licence version and it only covers frontier scale AI sites. |
| Non-US Data Center Registry (How Sovereign Is Sovereign Compute?) Richardson et al. (RAND, CNAS, TU Delft and independent researchers) | Per site location, owner, chips | Bulk download | Reuse unclear | An academic spreadsheet of 775 announced or existing projects in 123 countries outside the US, collected up to Q3 2024 from news and government sources. It records ownership model, year announced, investment and GPU counts where reported, but not megawatts, and the README states no licence. |
| IEA Energy and AI report and observatory International Energy Agency | Aggregate | Bulk download | Reuse unclear CC BY 4.0 for report text and figures; standalone datasets and data explorers are excluded from that licence | Regional and global projections of data centre electricity demand, with a downloadable dataset and an Energy and AI Observatory. Report text is CC BY 4.0, but the IEA terms carve out standalone datasets, which I did not find a separate licence for, and nothing is per site. |
| Ember electricity data and European data centre grid analysis Ember | Aggregate | API | Open with credit All content is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC-BY-4.0) | Open yearly and monthly electricity data by country plus Ember's analysis of European data centre grid demand, which it says rests on third party research because official statistics are lacking. Useful for national context, not for single sites. |
| Data Center Map Data Center Map | Per site location, operator, floor area, facility MW, certifications, opened, PUE | On request | Terms restrict reuse Terms: you must not scrape, data mine, crawl, cache, or programmatically retrieve or index content from the site | Claims more than 10,000 facilities with address, building and whitespace size, power capacity, tier rating, year operational and PUE, sold as CSV, GeoJSON or shapefile datasets on request. Its terms bar scraping and copying into an external database, so link only unless a licence is agreed. |
| Baxtel data centre directory Baxtel | Per site location, operator, owner, status, floor area, facility MW | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Terms of Service: no data scraping or data mining, and no copying or derivative works without prior written consent | Shows gross square footage, MW, metro, operator or owner and status (operational, planned, proposed) for facilities, with market tables. The terms forbid scraping and commercial reuse without consent, though public content may be cited with credit and a backlink, so link only. |
| Cloudscene directory Cloudscene | Per site location, operator, connectivity | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Terms of Service: no spiders, bots or scrapers, and no framing, mirroring, extracting or redistributing data | A marketplace directory of connectivity, hosting, colocation and cloud vendors, with more than 11,400 vendors listed worldwide. The terms forbid scraping and creating derivative works from large subsets of data, so link only. |
| DatacenterDynamics (DCD) news and intelligence Data Centre Dynamics Limited | Aggregate | Web search only | Terms restrict reuse Terms and Conditions: no copying or distribution of material for commercial or business use without prior written consent, and no building a database from the material | Trade news site with a DCD Intelligence product, whose per-site contents I could not see from the public homepage. Its terms ban building a database from material taken from the site, so use articles only as sources to read and link to. |

| Berkeley Lab 2024 United States Data Center Energy Usage Report Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory | Aggregate | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | Gives national electricity consumption for US data centres back to 2014 with scenarios to 2028, published 19 December 2024 via eScholarship. It has no site level data and the page states no licence, so cite it for context only. |
| EIA Form 860 annual electric generator report U.S. Energy Information Administration | Per site location, operator, owner, status, power source, opened | Bulk download | Open licence U.S. government publications are in the public domain and are not subject to copyright protection (EIA asks for a source acknowledgement). | Generator-level records for existing and planned plants of 1 MW or more, downloadable as spreadsheets. It does not list data centres, so it is useful only for matching on-site or adjacent generation to a campus. |
| EIA data centre energy pilot survey U.S. Energy Information Administration | Aggregate power source, cooling | PDF reports | Open licence U.S. government publications are in the public domain and are not subject to copyright protection (EIA asks for a source acknowledgement). | A pilot that asked about 196 operators in Texas, Washington state and Northern Virginia and Washington DC about energy sources, electricity use, site characteristics, server metrics and cooling. The announcement does not say facility-level results will be published, so treat it as a future source to watch rather than a site list. |
| Queued Up interconnection queue dataset Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with GridTracker | Per site location, status, grid MW, power source, grid connection | Bulk download | Open with credit The Queued Up data file is licensed CC BY 4.0, with attribution to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and GridTracker. | An Excel file of roughly 8,200 active generation and storage projects from the seven ISOs and RTOs plus 50 other utilities, with data through the end of 2025. It tracks supply being connected, not load, so it shows where new power is queued near data centre hubs rather than the data centres themselves. |
| ERCOT large load interconnection queue reports Electric Reliability Council of Texas | Aggregate grid MW, status, location | PDF reports | Open with credit Publicly available contents may be used, reproduced and redistributed if unmodified and with notices kept; raw data may be reused in compilations, charts and analyses without those notices. | Periodic PDF status updates give queue totals in MW by stage and by load zone (West, North, South, Houston) and split standalone from co-located projects. They do not name sites or separate data centres from other large loads, and the Batch Zero pages describe the study process rather than publishing a project list. |
| PJM cycle service request status table PJM Interconnection | Per site location, status, grid MW, power source, grid connection, planning reference | Bulk download | Terms restrict reuse Access to this website does not confer any license or ownership interest in the form or content of the website. | A filterable per-project table (state, county, transmission owner, MW, fuel, key dates) that exports to XLS or XML. It covers generation and storage requests across the PJM region, which includes Northern Virginia, but the page does not publish a load or data centre list, and PJM grants no reuse licence. |
| NYISO energy-intensive projects in the interconnection queue New York Independent System Operator | Aggregate grid MW, location | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Summarises large load requests seeking to connect in New York, with total MW and project counts and a map reference, naming data centres as one driver. The page gives no project-level fields or download, and NYISO's legal page could not be read, so reuse is unclear. |
| EPA ECHO facility compliance data U.S. Environmental Protection Agency | Per site location, operator, status | Bulk download | Reuse unclear EPA says documents may be freely distributed and used for non-commercial, scientific and educational purposes, that commercial use may be protected, and that geospatial content is by default in the public domain unless otherwise specified. | Weekly national facility files (over 130 fields per regulated site) plus web and map services, including air permit compliance records that can reveal sites with backup generators. Data centres are not labelled, so they must be found by name, address or industry code, and the ECHO download page itself states no reuse terms. |
| Loudoun County data centre map and inventory Loudoun County Department of Planning and Zoning | Per site location, status, floor area, planning reference | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The county links an interactive map of existing and proposed data centres, the LandMARC land management system, and a PDF table of building counts and floor area by election district and approval stage as of 1 March 2026 (about 233 existing buildings and 56.5 million square feet). We could not open the map itself, so its per-site fields are unverified, and the PDF carries only a no-warranty disclaimer. |
| Virginia State Corporation Commission docket search Virginia State Corporation Commission | Aggregate grid MW, grid connection | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Unofficial copies of filings in utility cases are searchable, usually within a day or two of filing, which is where large-load tariff and capacity filings for Virginia appear. The page gives no reuse terms, and customer-level detail is often redacted or aggregated. |
| Georgia Public Service Commission electric dockets Georgia Public Service Commission | Aggregate grid MW | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Hosts docket search and filings for Georgia Power resource plans and rate cases, where the large-load pipeline is reported; a 2025 trade press report of those filings described only aggregate gigawatts, not named sites. The page does not state reuse terms. |
| Arizona Corporation Commission large load workshop record Arizona Corporation Commission | Aggregate grid MW, status | Web search only | Reuse unclear | April 2026 workshop highlights give statewide totals (about two dozen operating data centres, more than 2,000 MW operating and more than 10,600 MW planned) and utility-level large load figures. Individual sites are not named; the workshop materials sit in docket E-00000A-25-0069 in the Commission's eDocket system. |
| 2024 United States Data Center Energy Usage Report Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy | Aggregate | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | National and scenario estimates of data centre electricity use back to 2014 and out to 2028, with the headline that data centres took about 4.4 per cent of US electricity in 2023. It is a modelling report, not a site register, and the publication page states no licence. |
| EPA environmental impact statement database U.S. Environmental Protection Agency | Per site location, status, planning reference | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Search of every federal EIS filed since 1987 by title, agency and state, with PDFs from 2012, capped at 500 results per search. Only projects needing a full EIS appear, so most data centres will never be listed; the search page states no reuse terms. |
| AESO connection project list and large load projects Alberta Electric System Operator | Per site location, status, grid MW, planning reference, grid connection | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The best Canadian per-project source: a connection project list with project number, planning area, type, status, stage and in-service date, plus a data centre map and dashboard linked from the large load page. Location is only a planning area, the September 2025 data centre update is aggregate, and we could not find a terms page, so reuse is unclear. |
| Regie de l'energie case R-4333-2026 on data centre rates Regie de l'energie du Quebec | Aggregate grid MW, status | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | Hydro-Quebec's written answers in the data centre and cryptocurrency rate case give category totals (about 297 MW at 1 April 2026, a forecast near 1,102 MW by 2035, and 800 MW still to be allocated by government). Connections go through a government block allocation process, and the answers name no individual projects. |
| Singapore data centre call for application selections Singapore Economic Development Board | Aggregate operator | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Names the four operators chosen for about 80 MW of new capacity but gives no per-operator or per-site split. IMDA, which runs the programme, blocked automated fetching, so its pages were not read, and the EDB terms page could not be fetched either. |
| MIDA Johor data centre hub briefing Malaysian Investment Development Authority | Aggregate status, facility MW | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Counts nine completed Johor projects (nearly 1,280 MW), six under construction (about 1,490 MW) and about 30 in planning or approval, with no project names. The disclaimer page covers only logo use and states no general content licence; TNB figures for the whole country come from a July 2026 parliamentary reply reported by the press. |
| Japan watt-bit collaboration data centre siting paper Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications | Aggregate grid MW | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | A Japanese-language policy paper noting that about 90 per cent of data centre floor area is in Kanto and Kansai and projecting added demand of about 7.15 GW by 2034. No facility list or site-level grid data, and METI and OCCTO pages either blocked access or showed no connection application data, so no per-site Japanese government source was reachable. |
| NSW Planning Portal major projects NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure | Per site location, status, planning reference, power source | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Each state significant development has an SSD number, council area, address, status and a full document set (environmental statement, agency advice, conditions) that often states generator and fuel storage counts. The page offers no bulk download and states no licence; only large projects are here, smaller schemes go through councils. |
| NSW Online DA data API NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure | Per site location, status, planning reference | API | Open with credit Creative Commons Attribution, credited to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. | A daily feed of every development application lodged on the portal since January 2019 (complete from July 2021), so council-level data centre applications can be found by description search. A data dictionary is provided; the page does not label data centres, so identification is by text. |
| Victoria ministerial planning permits register Victorian Department of Transport and Planning | Per site location, operator, status, planning reference | Web search only | Reuse unclear | Permit pages show permit number, address, applicant and a use description, including applications under the Development Facilitation Program. The register lists only permits decided by the Minister since 2014, has no stated download, and the copyright page we tried returned an error. |
| AEMO data centre connection reporting Australian Energy Market Operator | Aggregate grid MW, status | PDF reports | Open with credit AEMO permits anyone to use AEMO material for any purpose, with accurate and appropriate attribution to AEMO as author. | Quarterly Energy Dynamics now reports data centre connections in the National Electricity Market (11 transmission projects above 5 MW, 5.4 GW of maximum demand in the March 2026 quarter), and the ESOO covers the outlook. All figures are aggregate, and distribution-level visibility is still being developed. |
| Transgrid Sydney basin network capacity update Transgrid | Aggregate grid MW, grid connection | PDF reports | Reuse unclear | An August 2026 letter reporting about 1.5 GW of signed connection agreements in Western Sydney, more than 20 GW of enquiries across the basin, and up to 2 GW more possible with network augmentation. It names no projects or sites, and no reuse terms were read. |
| PARIVESH environmental clearance portal Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (hosted by NIC) | Per site location, operator, status, planning reference | Web search only | Reuse unclear | The national portal behind central and state environmental clearances; data centres usually appear as building or area development proposals rather than under a data centre heading, so they must be found by name. The portal page we could read states no data terms, and the portal's own search pages blocked automated access. |
