800 VDC data centre power architecture
A higher-voltage direct current power distribution design, developed through OCP, that removes conversion stages between the grid and AI racks.
- Type
- Technology
- Where it sits
- Power delivery per rack is a limit on how densely AI systems can be packed, so this affects which facilities can host future rack-scale systems.
- Constraint
- NVIDIA states 800 VDC rack hardware arrives from the second half of 2026 with row-level power from 2027, so most existing halls do not yet use it.
What we checked
- NVIDIA says it developed the approach with Google and Microsoft through OCP, with specifications published in March and July 2026. (source)
- OCP's Diablo 400 power rack specification aims to move rack power delivery from 48V to 400V or 800V DC for racks from 100 kW up to 1 MW. (source)
