Uruguay

Uruguay combines a 2024-2030 AI strategy and a mostly renewable grid with Google's Canelones data centre and a new state AI data centre.

The National AI Strategy 2024-2030 was approved on 21 November 2024 and covers governance, capacities (including infrastructure and data access) and sustainable development. In May 2026 the government set out a digital strategy under which the state telecoms firm Antel committed US$12 million, US$8 million of it for a specialised AI data centre in Pando. Google began building a US$850 million data centre in Canelones in 2024. For someone seeking compute, Uruguay is notable for low-carbon power rather than scale.

AI policy and activity

The strategy was developed through AGESIC and includes data protection by design. A new AI centre for research, talent and regulatory work was reported as expected in 2026.

Power and grid

Google cites more than 90% renewable share in Uruguay's energy matrix. We have not read the grid operator's own figures.

A local report says the design moved from water cooling to air cooling to cut water use, and that full-load power would equal about 203,000 homes. (source)
