Mexico

Mexico is announcing a very large public supercomputer and courting data centres, but the president ties support to electricity being available.

A National AI Plan announced on 9 September 2026 rests on a legal framework, talent and public software, and strategic infrastructure, including a national network of government data centres. A public supercomputer called Coatlicue was presented in November 2025. Querétaro is the main private hub, with several multi-billion-dollar projects announced. Power is the limit: the president has said support depends on energy coordination through the state utility and grid operator. For someone seeking compute, capacity is being announced faster than power is being delivered.

The plan is led by the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (ATDT). It proposes a federal legal framework built on transparency, lawfulness, non-discrimination, proportionality, human oversight and shared responsibility. It sits inside the wider Plan Mexico investment strategy.

Power and grid

A June 2026 electricity plan is reported at 739 billion pesos and 32,000 MW of new generation through 2030, 22,376 MW of it renewable. The industry association is reported to target about 1.5 GW of installed data centre capacity by 2030. Figures come from a commentary article, not the government text.
